Large solar flares have the potential to affect a wide range of military operations, including HF radio, radar, and geolocation. As the sole provider of space weather support for the Department of Defense, the Air Force Weather Agency’s Space Weather Operations Center (SpaceWOC) monitors and forecasts, among other kinds of solar activity, solar flares. The Air Force Weather Agency’s 16th Weather Squadron has developed the Flare Patrol Augmentation Tool (FPAT). FPAT is an interactive, web-based tool for monitoring solar activity using hydrogen-alpha imagery from the Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG). Although the analysis code is written using Interactive Data Language (IDL), the web-interface eliminates the need for any detailed knowledge of IDL. SpaceWOC forecasters are evaluating FPAT for use in both operations and training.
