Distance measurements between Earth and spacecraft were to be studied for the testing of Einstein's theory at a level of 1%. When this could not be achived due to early burnout of the amplifier tubes, a Conversational Spacecraft and Missile Observation System (COSMOS) was set up. It features an orbit evaluation code for a heavy n-body-system which is acted upon, at the same time, by several parametrized nongravitational perturbing forces and which is monitored with range and Doppler measurements. All nongravitational forces on the spacecraft were modelled. Surface temperatures measured on board imply an unexpectedly high worsening of the mirrors, with values 0.5 of the absorption coefficient after 10 yr in orbit, probably due to coloring of the covering glass.
