Quadrupole mass spectrometers pumped by a liquid neon-cooled cryopump in order to yield an extended mass range have been borne by balloons during controlled descents, thereby gathering detailed height profiles of stratospheric negative ions between 15 and 34 km. The main ion families are found to be HSO4(-)(H2SO4)m(HNO3)n and NO3(-)n. Trace gas data are obtained, and an assessment is made of ion fragmentation and contamination. The gathered data are also used to infer the rate of H2SO4 clustering.
