An explanation is given for the coincidence whereby the recessional velocity of matter is equal to the escape velocity. The actual size of the universe is thus evaluated without using the anthropic principle. The starting point for the interpretation is the introduction of torsion into the general relativistic equations. As Trautman (1973) pointed out, the inclusion of spin in the theory, that is, the so-called Einstein-Cartan theory, is the simplest and most natural modification of the original Einstein theory of gravitation. This extension is made in attempting to overcome the dichotomy between gravitation and the other interactions. It is suggested that the equality of velocities can be explained by using the spin-torsion interactions, without invoking the anthropic principle.
