A series of models for the kinematical and chemical evolution of the galactic disk are presented with the aim of reconciling the observational data on the rate of star formation and stochastic acceleration in the solar neighborhood with the photometry of edge-on disks by van der Kruit and Searle (1981). The effects of infall, star formation, stochastic acceleration, and chemical enrichment are governed by a small set of reasonable but idealized equations. It is concluded that models with star formation exponents and infall time-scales of one and 5.5 Gy respectively or 3/2 and 3.5 Gy respectively satisfy all the constraints on chemical evolution in the solar neighborhood. The relation between the velocity dispersions in the vertical direction and the ages of stars in the solar neighborhood requires that the exponent for stochastic acceleration lie in the range 1.5-2.5. This brackets the values needed to explain the nearly constant scale heights observed in the stellar disks of edge-on galaxies.
