SuperMAG is a global collaboration that provides ground magnetic field perturbations from a long list of stations in the same coordinate system, identical time resolution and with a common baseline removal approach. This unique high quality dataset provides a continuous and nearly global monitoring of the ground magnetic field perturbation. Before SuperMAG, global or even local studies required painstaking and labor-intensive data-handling, which effectively limited research. Analysts faced several inherent complications: confusing or even unknown coordinate systems, a multitude of data artifacts and errors, unknown baselines, and even difficulties obtaining data. These problems have resulted in a serious underutilization of data from magnetometers. The SuperMAG service is a truly global initiative including a long list of organizations and agencies providing data obtained from more than 300 ground based stations. The website includes a list of user-friendly data products, data downloads and other helpful tools. To compliment the measured ground magnetic field perturbations SuperMAG now includes global auroral images and solar wind data. The talk will further focus on lessons learned in the process of developing this community service. One lesson learned is that the validity of SuperMAG or any other type of virtual observatory is not defined by the funding agencies or the website developers themselves but by the users.
