Spectrophotometric observations of the peculiar object HM Sagittae, which experienced a flare associated with the appearance of a medium-excitation emission nebula beginning in 1975, are presented. Observations were carried out at intervals of 50 A in the 3300-7500 A region and in the infrared J, H, K and N bands in September, 1980. Results demonstrate a considerable increase in the excitation of the gaseous envelope of the object in the past 4 years, manifested most prominently in the Ne III, O III and He II forbidden lines. A weakening of the optical continuum is also observed which, together with a rise in the affective temperature of the hot star, is taken to be indicative of a lessening of the power of the stellar wind. The hard UV flux ionizing the envelope is observed to be lower than the total infrared flux, supporting the classification of HM Sge as a symbiotic star.
