Experiments conducted by Alpgard et al. (1981) have confirmed the violation of scaling in hadron interactions at ultrahigh energies which had been predicted from data obtained from cosmic-ray extensive air showers. A comparison of the predictions of the supercritical pomeron theory with experimental data on extensive air showers is considered, taking into account the differences between the hadron-nucleon and hadron-nucleus interactions. The differences are primarily related to the magnitude of the cross section and its dependence on the hadron energy. There is also a difference between the normalized structure functions which describe the hadron-nucleon and hadron-nucleus interactions. It is found that the predictions of the supercritical-pomeron theory, combined with the additive quark model, are consistent with experimental data on extensive air showers.
