A method of investigating the motion of a rigid body is presented, taking advantage of the distinctive motion of the center of mass in a long-period orbit near a libration point. It is shown that the differential equations of motion of the rigid body about its center of mass will have periodic, slowly varying coefficients. This special property of the motion in a long-period oribt may effectively be utilized for an approximate analysis of the motion of a rigid body about its center of mass, on the basis of perturbation theory developed for systems with slowly varying parameters. As an illustration, it is considered how the plane oscillatory motion of a body evolves with time.
