Since its discovery in 1932, the neutron has played a central role in several comological theories. An account is first given of its importance in theories which are not now believed to be satisfactory. It is then explained that the precise predictions of the currently favoured hot big bang theory depend on the value of the neutron half-life, which is still uncertain. Finally the possible role of the neutron in the origin of structure in a cold Universe is discussed.
