A summary of 3 yr of recordings of sudden impulses (SI) associated with ULF emissions in the earth's magnetic field over College, AK is presented, together with an analytical model for the occurrences. The ULF emissions are regarded as being produced by a sudden compression of the magnetospheric plasma. A Chapman-Ferraro double-dipole model is employed for the dayside magnetospheric cavity in order to quantify the changes in the magnetic field, plasma number density, energy, and pressure. Alterations in the plasma are described through use of the adiabatic constants of the plasma, with the assumption that the SI is fast compared to the temporal duration of magnetospheric convections and slow compared to particle motions along the ambient field. The plasma is compressed by the solar wind, with maximum distortions occurring near noon in high latitude regions.
