The contribution of quasars due to diffuse X-ray and gamma-ray backgrounds in the energy range 2 keV-100 MeV is estimated using forms of evolution consistent with observed optical counts. A cut-off in the distribution of quasars at a redshift z(max) is introduced, and theoretical source counts of quasars at 2 keV are presented and compared with observations of unidentified sources. The probability distribution function of optical-X-ray spectral index is assumed to be that which was determined for radio-quiet quasars by Zamorani et al. (1980) using a maximum likelihood method. The spectrum of the background radiation due to quasars, assuming the standard model, is given, and it is found that the model produces good fit to observed background intensity spectral shape. The observed luminosities of radio quiet quasars by Zamorani et al. are corrected, and it is suggested that the phenomenon responsible for luminosity evolution affects optical and X-ray luminosity. A consistent picture in which background intensity and spectral shape is produced almost entirely by quasars and unidentified extragalactic X-ray sources is also presented and explained.
