It is assumed that stars form in a cluster in a sequence due to the passage of some triggering mechanism such as a shock wave. Each protostar initially has about the same mass but gains mass by accretion from the ambient cloud. A theoretical HR diagram is obtained for a cluster consisting of stars evolving in this manner and this is found to be in excellent agreement with the observed HR diagram for the young cluster NGC 2264.
