A Lagrangian model is developed for the fragmentation process in a molecular cloud using the dynamics of intermolecular interactions. It is noted that the transfer of the trigger perturbation from long to short length scales is reliable, and yields the prediction of a strong stellar mass spectrum dependence in both the initial characteristics of the molecular cloud and the interaction of the cloud with external phenomena. Study results suggest a rich taxonomy of star formation situations.
