The most interesting event of the circulation in the stratosphere and mesosphere is the midwinter warming. Together with conventional rocketsonde and radiosonde data, satellite infrared radiance measurements provide a comprehensive record of warmings over both hemispheres. The observed characteristics of the stratospheric warmings are summarized. It is shown that a close coupling exists between the troposphere and the stratosphere and that the vertical structure of the quasi-stationary waves and the interaction between wave 1 and wave 2 is of great importance for the development of the different types of warmings. It is also shown that large differences exist between the two hemispheres. While the warmings develop relatively regularly each year during the southern winters, the interannual variability of the northern winters is very large.
