The evolution of planar rings of gravitating bodies or material points moving around a massive central body is investigated by means of a computer simulation. The simulation is based on the sphere of influence method, in which particles within a certain radius of each other are considered to move in accordance with the two-body problem with the center of mass travelling in a Keplerian orbit around the central body. Results are presented of the computerized simulation of the orbital evolution of two, three and four gravitationally interacting points with masses close to that of Pluto, and planar rings of particles undergoing collisional accretion in regions corresponding to the accretion zones of the terrestrial and giant planets. It is found that, if the original particle orbits are assumed to lie in the same plane, corresponding to small inclinations, and the effects of gas resistance forces may be neglected, the number of planets formed in the zone of the terrestrial planets will be significantly greater than that observed, while the original solid mass in the zone of the giant planets will be in agreement with observations. A number of terrestrial planets formed close to the actual number is obtained, however, if a three-dimensional ring model is used.
