Latitude and longitude variations in the color properties of cloud formations on Jupiter are studied using spectrograms of Jupiter's central meridian obtained in 1979. The relative spectrophotometric gradient is determined in the 0.40-0.68 micron region, where the north tropic zone is bluest at 0.03 micron, and the southern dark equatorial belt is reddest at 0.46 micron. Differences in the color of the northern and southern polar regions are observed with a clear correlation between the color and relative albedo for cloud features. Limb darkening in the polar regions is found to be almost independent of wavelength, and is explained by the presence of aerosol in the upper atmosphere. Results are supported by Voyager 2 measurements made with a photometer-polarimeter at 2400 A, and it is concluded that an aerosol layer or haze restricted in terms of altitude has significant intrinsic absorption, which is enhanced towards the short wavelength region of the spectrum.
