The detection of the molecular hydrogen rotation lines v = 0-0, S(8), S(12), S(13), S(14), and S(15) in the shocked region of the Orion molecular cloud is reported. Line frequencies agree with predicted values to experimental accuracy, and the H2 energy levels are found to be in LTE at 2000 + or - 400 K up to the J = 17 level, at 1.86 eV above the ground state. The 2.1-micron extinction at peak 1 is between 2.2 and 4.0 mag, and evidence is found for variations of H2 emission intensity apart from reddening. In addition, limits are determined for the amount of gas hotter than 2000 K.
