The properties of the images of a distant radiating source are derived through the application of the results of optical scalar techniques to a static, spherical distribution of matter. A method is outlined which allows for possible variation in the mass density traversed by each beam of radiation. The fact that the source has finite size is shown to produce a damping effect on any possible large amplification introduced by the star nearest the particular beam being considered. It is demonstrated that the introduction of the concept of a variable density of matter contained within the beam allows the inclusion of Ricci focusing to be realistically varied from all, if the beam is large in comparison to the projected interstellar spacing, to none if the beam is very small. Weyl focusing is included separately.
