The infrared emission spectrum of H2 resulting from the associative detachment of H and H- is calculated. It is characterized by pure rotational transitions in excited vibrational states and is readily distinguished from that expected from ultraviolet pumping or from shock excitation. The combined effects of associative detachment and of ultraviolet pumping are discussed with reference to H2 line emission from planetary nebulae.
