We present the results of an infrared survey of 44 Southern H2O masers which have mostly been found near to type I OH masers (Batchelor et al., 1980). This work represents a continuation of our systematic 3.6 μm search and study of possible infrared counterparts. The statistical results are very similar to those previously reported (Moorwood and Salinari, 1981) for a sample of 46 H2O masers selected from the lists of Genzel and Downes (1977, 79) whose survey was more directly biased towards compact H II regions. Infrared objects having K-L > 2 have been found to coincide, within the 2 positional errors, with about 40% of the H2O masers in both samples and analysis of the combined sample of 90 masers demonstrates that these objects are more concentrated towards the maser positions than those which are less red. The detailed distribution of the observed IR/H2O separations is consistent with a positional association. Evidence that the number of detections, particularly of very red objects, is being limited by our 3.6 μm sensitivity limit (mL ≃ 9) is provided by the fact that possible counterparts have only been found for 29% of those masers more distant than 4 kpc compared with 58% for the closer ones. More extensive observations, including photometry out to 20 m, CFV scans around 10 μm and angular slit scans have been made of most of the objects having K-L ≳ 3. All but one of these are believed to be pre-main-sequence OB stars or compact H II regions. There appears to be no clear relationship however between the evolutionary phase of these objects and the appearance of the H2O emission spectra.
