The full disc irradiance at 2800 MHz ('F10.7') of the sun is calculated on the basis of individual active regions (ARs) on the sun using data from the Ca II K line at 393 nm. The solar radio emission is utilized for the UV measurements from above the atmosphere since it does not have significant calibration problems and since day by day records are available for many years. Techniques for the parameterization of the model calculations are presented which, after small adjustments, are applicable to UV measurements. Results show an excellent overall agreement and a very close correspondence of the day to day variations, and no systematic discrepancy is found between the model calculations and observations over the entire ten-year period of the study. In addition, all contributions to the 2800 MHz irradiance are determined to be directly related to the individual ARs on the sun at any given day. It is concluded that this method can provide data for an independent evaluation of short-term as well as long-term fluctuations of the solar observed irradiance.
