Copernicus observations of 88 early-type stars in the 1240-A Mg II lines (Bohlin et al., 1983) are combined with the configuration-interaction value of the 1240-A doublet oscillator strength (0.0004 + or - 0.0001; Hibbert et al., 1983) to evaluate the interstellar Mg abundance. The calculated Mg depletions (MgD) are plotted against reddening, mean line-of-sight H density, and the strength of the 2200-A feature. The mean MgD is found to be 0.4 dex, corresponding to 40 percent of the Mg in the gas phase. MgD is shown to increase with increasing H density, but no correlation is observed between Mg depletion and reddening or the 2200-A feature.
