It is pointed out that the theory of stochastic self-propagating star formation (SSPSF) has had some successes in explaining the structure and evolution of galaxies. However, the precise role of the gas has not been considered in any detail. In the original model, gas was not even explicitly considered but was assumed to be present. In an elaboration of the model a two-component gas system was incorporated into the simulation along with the stars by Seiden et al. (1982). This model is succesful in stimulating various properties of galaxies. The present investigation is concerned with a deeper exploration of the consequences of the gas model. An attempt is made to determine the correspondence between the gas components of the model and the observed components of galactic gas. The partition of the gas into H I and H2 comes about very naturally as a result of feedback in the propagating star formation process.
