Pulsar radio emission origins are discussed for the suggested cases of radiative electromagnetic instability, produced by a single relativistic stream flowing along a curved path, and two-stream instability, due to the interaction between positron and electron beams created above the polar caps. These physical mechanisms are tested by means of calculations for pulsars where the beams are finite in extent, curved (because they are field-aligned), and immersed in the external plasma or vacuum. In the terms of the present description, the narrow band emission process is favored, and considerable latitude exists in specifying the particle densities and energies. The electromagnetic energy radiated through the beam boundaries is found to be incompatible with pulsar radio luminosity, unless the expected beams are denser and constituted by particles more energetic than those entertained in the existing literature.
