To appreciate the principal problem of the quasars it is first of all necessary to recall the interpretation of the redshifts of external galaxies. The definitive properties of a quasar are that it appears unresolved (like star) in a photograph but exhibits a peculiar emission line spectrum of high redshift. Certain galaxy nuclei possess similar properties and it has been suggested that all quasars are events in the nuclei of galaxies. The origin of the energy required, which is large, could be gravitational. Rival theories of the nature of the redshift in quasars are currently under lively discussion as a result of new optical observations.
