The results of a statistical analysis of current data on the absorption line redshifts of quasars are presented and discussed. The preferred values of the distribution of the relative velocity in the absorption spectra is often taken as supporting the intrinsic hypothesis that the matter causing the absorption lines is located in the near vicinity of quasars. An analysis is presented to show that the lines can just as well have been caused by a density perturbation in the early universe which caused periodicity to be present in the distribution of the bodies formed after the recombination epoch. This explanation would be consistent with the cosmological explanation of the absorption lines. It is further shown that the power spectrum of absorption line redshifts favors the cosmological hypothesis, but that at least some of the objects causing the absorption do not belong to the quasars.
