The empirical and theoretical status of the correlation between the angular momenta (J) and masses (M) of astronomical systems is discussed. It is noted that if J is equal to the product of M to the alpha power and p (p being a constant), then empirically alpha is approximately 5/3 for objects of any one type. An alpha of approximately 2 would correspond to objects of many different types. In a theoretical sense, alpha = 5/3 can be understood as a consequence of Newtonian physics applied to rotating, gravitationally bound systems. An alpha of approximately 2, however, is connected with the tendency of systems of larger size to have smaller mean densities and may ultimately be cosmological in origin.
