The Pierre Auger Observatory will undertake a high statistics study of cosmic rays above 1019 eV with the goal of understanding the origin of the highest energy particles in nature. An overview of the primary physics objectives, the detector systems, and observatory performance will be presented. The current status of the project will be described.
