I discuss the efforts towards understanding the physical and geometrical structure of the X-ray source and the circumnuclear medium in AGNs, based on X-ray spectroscopy. I will review recent results on X-ray occultations in local AGNs, and the observational evidence for a compact X-ray sources (a few gravitational radii) and a multi-component circumnuclear obscurer/reflector, consisting of three distinct components: Broad line region clouds, a parsec-scale component, and a galactic-scale component.
