The first images of emission at the foot of the Io Flux Tube were obtained using ProtoCAM at NASA's IRTF in early 1992 (Science 262, 1035, 1993). This emission feature appears on the disc of Jupiter as a sub-arcsecond spot moving across the disc in concert with Io's orbital motion about Jupiter. It is the surface expression of the electromagnetic interaction between Io and Jupiter's magnetic field and it has subsequently been observed with the FOC and WFPC imaging instruments on the HST. With the introduction of NSFCAM, a 256 by 256 array infrared camera, and IRTF image quality upgrades, greatly improved images of this phenomena are now possible. New images, obtained in 1995 and 1996, show an isolated instantaneous Flux Tube Footprint well separated from the auroral emissions in both polar regions. We show examples of emission extending well downstream of the instantaneous IFT footprint and describe how the improved images are to be used in diagnosing the Io interaction and related phenomena.
