A set of near-UV Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 images has been used to retrieve the stratospheric aerosol distributions at the Jovian equator and the South Polar Region (SPR). The microphysical models were based on an one-dimensional code whose algorithms were already applied to the Earth's stratosphere by Turco et al. (J. Atmos. Sci., 36, 699--717, 1979), and include the effects of particle sedimentation, coagulation, eddy diffusion, and growth by hydrazine condensation. The results obtained were consistent with the picture in which at the polar regions the aerosols are formed from auroral-related phenomena, while at the equatorial region the largest component of the aerosol layer would be those particles formed after condensation of hydrazine onto the condensation nuclei. The best model fits correspond to particles smaller than about 0.05 mu m at the equator and 0.07 mu m at the SPR, with total optical depths at 410 nm of 0.3 and 1.3 at the equator and SPR, respectively. The particles at the SPR were found to be considerably more charged than those at the equator, and the derived differences in their refractive indices reflected a compositional change. The derived particle distribution allowed us to compute the aerosol radiative heating rates, and its contribution to the total heating mainly caused by the absorption at visible and near-IR methane bands.
