The Galileo mission has provided evidence to support the remarkable conclusion that Ganymede has an iron core. The detection of magnetic field perturbations in the vicinity of Ganymede consistent with an intrinsic satellite magnetic field suggets the existence of an active dynamo in a liquid metallic core. Accordingly, Ganymede's internal structure and thermal state may be significantly different from Voyager-era models. For a model Ganymede with a liquid core at the Fe-FeS eutectic liquidus, a silicate mantle with internal heat production, and an ice shell, and with the assumption of conductive heat transfer, the ice solidus temperature is exceeded at some range of depths, suggesting that Ganymede may have a deep water ocean above the silicate mantle. Models including convective heat transport will be calculated to evaluate the robustness of this conclusion.
