Observations by the Galileo plasma wave receiver in June 1996 revealed that Ganymede is the source of narrowband electromagnetic radio waves, making this satellite the first in the solar system to have non-thermal radio emissions. The emissions are the result of mode-coupling from electrostatic electron cyclotron emissions near the upper hybrid resonance frequency, making them similar to non-thermal continuum radiation found at all of the known magnetized planets.
