Just prior to its first encounter with Ganymede, Galileo encountered a current sheet that was exceptionally thin based on observations by earlier spacecraft. This thinness is consistent with either a colder denser plasma than usual or a more anisotropic, pancake shaped particle distribution. Further, the current sheet arrival was delayed from the expected crossing time. The azimuthal component of the field was greater than expected and the radial less. This situation persisted for 2.5 days. Then the current sheet suddenly became thick and the field turbulent. The turbulence remained for about 12 hours and the current sheet timing returned to that expected. We interpret this event as analogous to a terrestrial substorm in which the Jovian current sheet is disrupted when stress builds up in the magnetodisk and plasma is suddenly released down the tail. The release of presumably iogenic plasma allows the magnetodisk to contract. The consequent turbulence and heating associated with the disruption event should isotropize the plasma and allow it to reach the ionosphere, causing aurora in the range of latitudes observed by observers at 1 AU.
