As Galileo approached Io a band of left-handed, nearly circularly
polarized waves appeared at frequencies consistent with ion cyclotron
resonance with singly ionized SO and SO_2. We review the properties of
these waves and discuss the conditions under which such waves should be
unstable in the Io torus.
