The Clementine Mission to the Moon entered lunar orbit in February 1994 and systematically mapped the surface through 265 orbits. The Clementine scientific payload included a Long-Wave Infrared (LWIR) camera with a single passband centered at 8.75 microns. The LWIR camera had a 128 x 128 mercury cadmium telluride focal plane array and used a catadioptric lens. The field of view of this instrument was one degree by one degree. Preliminary analysis of LWIR images showed a striking similarity to the Clementine Ultraviolet-Visible camera images, implying that the daytime thermal emission of the lunar surface is controlled by large-scale topography. We have been working on the calibration of the LWIR camera. Bad pixels covering at least ten percent of the camera area have been accounted for, and pixel-to-pixel variations across the camera have been eliminated. Initial calibration efforts involved using pre-flight laboratory measurements and in-flight lunar and space measurements to characterize the response of the instrument. Here, we present the first calibrated LWIR images of the lunar surface. Further calibration efforts will involve comparing LWIR images to locations of known temperature on the Moon, i.e., Apollo landing sites. Such an analysis will allow us to convert LWIR DN values to brightness temperatures. Comparison of LWIR images to other Clementine observations will allow us to further constrain the thermal emission characteristics, physical properties, and thermal environment of the lunar surface.
