Several unidentified molecular features of moderate strength were discovered in the spectrum of comet Halley. The presence of these molecular emission bands exclusively in the plasma tail spectrum, and not in the coma spectrum indicated that the new features were molecular ions. There are three groups of bands observed near 4900, 5300, and 6000 A. The bands have been observed in the plasma tail spectra of four comets. No known laboratory spectra of molecular ions match the observed emission band features. Comet Hyakutake was observed in March 1996 using the KPNO 2.1 m telescope and Cassegrain spectrograph. Low resolution spectra in the wavelength region 4000-7000 A were obtained of the coma and the plasma tail. The data were reduced to isolate the plasma tail spectrum from the coma spectrum. Results of the search for unidentified molecular ions will be reported.
