An analysis of optical long-slit spectra of comet Hyakutake (1996B2) obtained from the NOAO 2.1-m telescope on 24 and 25 March 1996 is presented. The spectra cover a spectral range of approximately {4000-7200 Angstroms} at {3-5 Angstroms} resolution with a spatial resolution of 1.5 arcseconds. During these observations the comet made its closest approach to Earth and came to within a distance of 0.1 AU. This close approach has provided a unique opportunity for the study of molecular abundances within a few hundred kilometers of the nucleus of the comet. Near closest approach, the spatial resolution corresponds to a distance of less than 150 km. Special attention is given to the spatial distribution of NH_2. Observations of the distribution is compared to those predicted using simple models, such as the Haser model and Monte Carlo simulations.
