The thermal evolution of comets as well as the onset of comet activity is strongly influenced by the thermal conductivity and diffusivity of the material in the near--surface layers. We have studied a set of sample materials which are supposed to be abundant in these layers: porous water ice, porous CO_2 ice and loose mineral samples. The experiments were performed in a small vacuum recipient at space conditions. The thermal properties were measured by a line heat source and were evaluated by both the classical, long term asymptotic line heat source technique (straight line of the temperature vs. log time curve) and a new method which applies least square optimized fit of the exact analytic solution. The latter allows to determine both the thermal conductivity and -- with less accuracy -- the thermal diffusivity of the samples. Examples for several samples will be shown and the accuracy of obtained values will be disscussed and compared to the results obtained by the classical method and theoretical predictions. A similar technique will be used for the thermal probe of the ROSETTA SSP experiment MUPUS.
