Voyager UVS spectra of the darkside aurora of Uranus are analyzed for the six day period after the closest encounter on Jan. 24th of 1986. The Uranian auroral spectra are not only much fainter than those of Jupiter and saturn, but also exhibit quite different spectral shapes. The EUV region shows signatures of absorption by H2, and the FUV region possibly by hydrocarbons. Both absorption signatures and certain spectral features could be used to estimate the characteristic energies of precipitating particles. Due to low intensities and instrumental sensitivity, especially in the FUV region, as well as very short duration of most auroral observations, short duration spectra with similar geometry were combined to enhance the signal to noise ratio, and compared with few available long duration spectra. Model spectra were constructed to compare with observations for the wavelength regions of 500-1700 Angstroms \ with various electron-excited H2 emission bands and H Lyman series transitions. Several different energy distribution functions of the precipitating electrons at the top of the atmosphere were tested, and a standard neutral Uranian atmospheric model from Voyager occultation experiments were used with assumptions of H2 self-absorption and varying hydrocarbon abundances for comparison with observation data.
