The central regions of the Milky Way offer a unique opportunity to study in details the structure and formation of such a complex stellar-dynamical system. Indeed our position within the Galaxy allows a detailed star-by-star analysis. However the high extinction, the crowding and the confusion between disk and bulge sources conspire against our understanding of the inner Galactic regions. The answers to fundamental questions are still unknown, such as: how did the bulge form? how does it link to the spiral structure? is there a bulge and a bar or a single triaxial structure? what does the Milky Way look like from the outside? I will review here the current status of our understanding.
