Star formation activity in our galaxy is strikingly prominent and peculiar in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ, | l | ≤ 1.5dd, | b | ≤ 0.5dd). Recent large scale mid-infrared surveys (ISOGAL, MSX) have revealed a huge population of newly formed stars still embedded in their dusty native cocoons. Here we show how the recent star formation rate in the Galactic Centre region can be derived from these surveys; we then present preliminary results from a follow-up program with the Spitzer Space Telescope.
