This paper summarizes the initial results from the Galileo plasma wave instrument during the flybys of Io and Ganymede. During both flybys very accurate measurements of the local electron density were obtained from electrostatic emissions at the upper hybrid resonance frequency and from the cutoff of electromagnetic radiation at the electron plasma frequency. At Io, a well-defined electron density peak of about 4 x 10(4) cm(-3) was observed in the downstream wake. At Ganymede a nearly parabolic electron density profile was observed centered on closest approach with a maximum density of about 4.5 x 10(1) cm(-3) . In both cases it appears that the spacecraft passed through a dense plasma produced in the near vicinity of the moon. At Ganymede observations of whistler-mode chorus emissions also indicated the presence of a relatively strong magnetic field of at least 400 nT.
