The status of current Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) projects is presented. Studies are funded and on-going in Europe and in the US. In Europe, ESO is completing the OWL (60-100 m telescope project) conceptual design, while a technology development programme towards a European ELT has been launched in 2005 for 4 years within the European Community's 6th Framework Programme (FP6). In the US 2 projects are emerging, with a share of private and public funding: the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) and the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT). These various projects are briefly presented, with emphasis on the European situation.
