This paper is a summary of my presentation for the prix HP-SF2A jeune chercheur. I briefly review the history of astronomical interferometry and its principles. The interest of the technique is illustrated with some results I have obtained with other colleagues. An example of future direction for the field is described, the 'OHANA project. Very first results of fringe detection at the Keck observatory are presented.
