Broad-band B, V, and R optical and J and H near-IR photometry are presented for NGC 1344, which has one of the thin shells seen in projection around otherwise normal elliptical galaxies, in order to determine the constitution and place constraints on their mode of formation. It is suggested by the color indices derived that the shell comprises a star population which may be bluer than the main body of the galaxy, and no evidence is found of recent star formation. The results presented favor dynamical models of shell formation, involving such phenomena as the recent mergers of disk galaxies with the elliptical.
