Field-aligned current signatures during substorms at synchronous orbit and their relationship to field configuration are investigated using synchronous spacecraft and ground magnetic field data. A variety of simultaneous GOES 2 and GOES 3 observations made when the two spacecraft have a two-hour separation is examined. Comparing magnetic perturbations at one spacecraft position with those at another, the authors reveal general characteristics of the field-aligned current signatures and reexamine the results obtained by Nagai (1982). The D perturbations at synchronous orbit are compared with ground midlatitude D perturbations in the same LT meridian. The occurrence of field-aligned current signatures is surveyed, and the results are used to construct a model for the three-dimensional substorm current system.
