It is the key to select a suitable reference orbit for the modified Encke method. But the reference orbits for the long-arc orbit calculation of an artificial satellite must be rectified section by section. The rectifications will at the same time, introduce additional complexities into the calculation of orbit determination. In this paper the authors investigate carefully how to select a suitable reference orbit and how to reduce the number of rectifications.
