Neutrinos: Nucleosynthesis
Scientific paper
The r process is the rapid neutron capture nucleosynthesis process responsible for the formation of approximately half of the elements with A > 70. A promising proposed astrophysical site of the r process is the neutrino-heated bubble expanding off a newly formed neutron star in a core-collapse supernova. If this is indeed the site of the r process, all stages of the r process, from the establishment of the initial conditions to the final expulsion of the r-process products, will be subject to an intense neutrino flux. Here the influence of neutrino-nucleus scattering during the r process itself is investigated. The author finds that the effects of the neutrino-nucleus interaction places strict limits on the neutrino flux that can be present during a successful r process.
